Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Social and Forensic Psychiatry and Drug Abuse Ministry of Health of Ukraine was established in 1984 as a branch of Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of General and Forensic Psychiatry named after V.P. Serbskii.

The Institute is the main institution of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in the field of Social and Forensic Psychiatry and works toward improving the mental health system, the development of modern science-based methods of prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and re-socialization of people with mental health problems aiming to restore their social functioning. .

 The Institute is  guided in its activity by the  scientific and social policy priorities defined by the Decrees of the President of Ukraine, the Orders of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the Orders of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the needs of health care practice.

The Institute is headed by Dr. Iryna Pinchyk, MD, PhD, Chief Specialist of Ministry of Health of Ukraine in specialty "Psychiatry and Narcology" since November 2012.

Today, the staff of the Institute consists of 39 employees, including 32 scientists (including 9 doctors of medical sciences, 13 candidates of medical sciences, 2 candidates of psychological sciences), who’s work  is to  solve  the current problems in social psychiatry (medical and social problems of mental disorders therapy in adults, children and adolescents, psychosomatic medicine, child psychiatry, coercive psychiatric interventions, psychiatric care to prisoners),  comprehensive forensic psychiatric examination and addiction problems (chemical and non-chemical forms of addiction, prevention of substance dependence, tobacco, gambling, Internet dependence).

The Institute has 6 academic departments, where 4 applied scientific research studies were conducted in 2016

The Institute operates an outpatient department, with highly trained staff providing   qualified diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive care to the population of Ukraine, mostly - to people with complex and treatment-resistant forms of mental disorders and  its  complications.

The forensic experts of the Institute are involved in evaluation of  secondary and particularly difficult forensic psychiatric expertise in civil and criminal proceedings.

The Institute publishes the professional journal "Archives of Psychiatry."

A specialized academic council D 26.620.01 with the right of dissertation defense on specialty 14.01.16 - "Psychiatry" operates in the Institute since 28.10.1998.

Scientific activities of the Institute are carried out both in Ukraine and internationally - in cooperation with leading scientists of Belarus, Germany, Great Britain, Lithuania, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Ireland, USA and Poland.
